Scientists analyzed urine samples from women giving birth between 2000 and 2021. The results, published in JAMA Network Open, were striking. Every woman tested carried multiple chemicals. The average was 45. Some carried 64. These were not exotic industrial toxins. They were chemicals found in food packaging, personal care products, flooring, and furniture — things women touch and use every single day.
The chemicals included phthalates, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and newer plasticizers. Researchers tied higher levels of diisononyl phthalate to a 16% greater chance of preterm birth and delivery that came 0.6 days earlier on average. Phthalic acid was linked to a 48% higher chance of preterm birth and delivery 1.1 days earlier. Phthalates and alternative plasticizers were also tied to lower birth weight. These are not rounding errors. These are measurable shifts in how babies enter the world.
The Replacement Chemical Problem Nobody Is Talking About
Here is where the story gets worse. Many of the chemicals showing up in pregnant women are not the originals regulators warned us about. They are the replacements. Bisphenol S was introduced after bisphenol A, known as BPA, came under fire for health risks. Regulators approved it. Industry marketed it as safer. Now bisphenol S shows up in more than 93% of pregnant women tested. The senior researcher on the JAMA study said it plainly: “We found that several newer chemicals used to replace toxic ones are also harmful.”
This is not a new story. It is the third or fourth time this same cycle has played out with plasticizers and bisphenols since the 1990s. A chemical gets restricted. A replacement gets fast-tracked. A decade later, researchers find the replacement in pregnant women’s urine and link it to the same kinds of harm. Regulators move slowly. The chemical stays on shelves. Repeat.
The Honest Limits of What This Study Proves
The study is large and the findings are serious. But it is fair to note what the research does not yet prove. Urine samples capture recent exposure, not a lifetime of buildup. The study shows associations, not confirmed cause and effect. Researchers tested 113 chemicals, but that still leaves a vast universe of untested compounds that could also be playing a role. A related University of California, Davis study noted that many of the individual chemical levels were generally low, which suggests that the risk from any single chemical may be modest on its own.
None of that makes the findings less important. It actually makes them more complicated. If modest individual exposures across 45 or more chemicals add up to measurable harm, then the entire way regulators test chemicals — one at a time, in isolation — is fundamentally broken. The real-world body does not experience chemicals one at a time. It experiences all of them at once, every day.
Why Seasonal Spikes Should Alarm Every Pregnant Woman
One finding from a separate study of pregnant women in Atlanta deserves more attention than it has received. Exposure to certain chemical groups, including herbicides, phthalates, and flame retardants, spiked significantly in warmer months. That means a woman’s chemical burden is not static. It rises and falls with the seasons, likely tied to outdoor pesticide use, increased time outdoors, and changes in diet. A woman in her first trimester in May faces a meaningfully different chemical environment than the same woman in January. No doctor is telling her that.

That gap between what science now knows and what women are actually told is the most pressing problem here. Major medical organizations have not issued specific guidance on the 45 detected chemicals. Clinicians have no evidence-based checklist to hand a pregnant patient. The research is moving faster than the institutions meant to act on it. That is an unacceptable lag when the stakes are preterm birth and low birth weight. Demanding faster regulatory action and honest product labeling is not alarmism. It is the minimum reasonable response to what this data shows.
