The Algorithm Knows What Spreads, Not What Is True
Northwestern University researchers published a review in August 2023 in the journal Trends in Cognitive Sciences. They found that algorithms consistently amplify content that is prestigious, comes from your in-group, triggers moral outrage, or stirs emotion. They called this the PRIME framework. The critical detail: accuracy plays no role in what gets amplified. A false story that triggers outrage travels farther than a true story that does not.
A 2024 study found that outrageous headlines on Facebook and Twitter were more likely to be shared without being read first. People forward the feeling, not the fact. Platforms profit from both. This is not a bug in the system. It is what the system was optimized to produce, even if engineers never wrote “spread lies” into a single line of code.
Where the Science Gets Complicated
Honest reporting requires saying this clearly: peer-reviewed research also warns against overstating the case. One major scientific synthesis found the evidence that algorithms directly drive unhealthy mental states is “very thin,” supporting at best a small effect. Several longitudinal studies show a link between heavy social media use and altered brain regions in teenagers, but causality runs in both directions. Kids who are already anxious may use social media more, not the other way around.
Some research even suggests algorithms can expose users to more diverse views, not fewer. A study found that users actively seek out more partisan content than their algorithms actually suggest, meaning personal choice drives polarization as much as platform design does. These findings do not erase Haugen’s documents or the brain-scan data. They do mean the full picture is messier than any single viral video will tell you.
What You Can Actually Do About It
The most practical takeaway from all of this research is also the simplest. Algorithms feed you more of what you react to. Anger, fear, and disgust are the reactions that travel fastest. If you slow down before sharing, search out sources that challenge your existing views, and treat your attention as the scarce resource it actually is, you reduce the algorithm’s leverage over you. That is not a radical act. It is just using a tool instead of being used by one.
The platforms will not redesign themselves out of a profitable business model without pressure from regulators, advertisers, or users. The European Union’s Digital Services Act of 2023 requires algorithm transparency, but enforcement remains weak. Until accountability catches up to the technology, the most powerful defense you have is knowing how the system works — and choosing not to hand it your worst impulses on a silver platter.
