Fault Stress Reaches A Thousand-Year Peak

Researchers led by Earth scientists at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa report that tectonic stress along the San Andreas and San Jacinto faults has reached, and in places exceeded, the highest levels measured in the past millennium. The study says the pressure has been building since the region’s last major earthquake more than 160 years ago.

The research team says the two fault systems may now be capable of a large, connected rupture that runs through both at once. That kind of joint break could produce a much bigger and more damaging earthquake than either fault would cause alone.

Cajon Pass Sits At The Center Of Concern

Much of the buildup centers on the Cajon Pass, where the San Andreas and San Jacinto faults come close together northeast of Los Angeles. Separate modeling puts stress at roughly 2.8 megapascals on the Mojave South segment and higher still on the San Jacinto-San Bernardino section, above the highest value seen in a thousand-year simulation of the area.

Scientists describe this junction as important because stress that builds on one fault can transfer to its neighbor. Over centuries, elastic strain from Pacific and North American plate motion keeps loading both fault lines, even during periods when the ground stays quiet on the surface.

What The Warning Does And Does Not Mean

Earthquake scientists have long said that stress studies like this one measure long-term hazard, not a countdown clock. The Hawaiʻi researchers and other seismologists are clear that their findings show elevated risk over time, not a forecast for when the next major quake will strike.

A cluster of smaller earthquakes shook Southern California this summer, but researchers say that activity falls within the region’s normal range and does not signal that a bigger quake is imminent. Separate research on major earthquakes elsewhere, including a deadly 2022 quake in Mexico felt in California, found that distant quakes rarely have a direct effect on local faults, though rare triggering effects are not impossible.

The new findings have circulated widely online, with some social media posts tying a recent deadly earthquake in Colombia to fresh fears about California. The University of Hawaiʻi study itself does not link that event to Southern California’s fault stress. Its authors instead point to more than a century and a half of steady loading on the San Andreas and San Jacinto systems as the real driver behind their warning.

For residents living near the fault lines, the message from researchers is less about a specific date and more about readiness. The study adds to a long line of scientific work, dating back decades, showing that Southern California’s crust keeps absorbing stress from ongoing plate motion, stress that eventually has to release somewhere.
